"I like to watch those Ancient Astronaut shows on TV, but I know the stuff isn’t true."

Same here! The problem with the conspiracy theory mindset is that they always take some real grains of interesting and unexplained phenomenon...but then jump to crazy conclusions, instead of doing any proper investigation of the actual evidence.

So yeah, there is a lot of truly fascinating mystery to stuff like the Nazca lines, various odd ancient artifacts, mysteries of ancient construction methods and the origins of images and stories in ancient texts. That is all real stuff, that bears serious further investigation, for sure.

The problem is that the "Ancient Astronaut" conspiracists simply start with their desired outcome as a pre-conceived conclusion and force-fit everything to have to tie into that as an answer. The only thing they tend to discount, happens to be *every other possible explanation* beyond their preconceived fixations. Like every true conspiracist, they also simply casually ignore every bit of contradictory evidence, which doesn't bear out their beliefs. They simply turn a blind eye to all their own gaping holes and flaws in their own stories.

So, they are like Birthers in a way. It all starts from being rigidly fixated on belief-based assumptions, instead of doing the proper thing of starting with evidence and properly examining where it can lead, without pre-biasing the outcome.

G:

I like to watch those Ancient Astronaut shows on TV, but I know the stuff isn't true. But, sometimes I have to have something in the background besides FOXNews.

Plus, thanks for saying nice things about my "coy" ways. It makes me feel good when people enjoy this stuff.

The planet Xers were the first group of nutjobs I got interested in (along with the Moon landing deniers). I remember this wackadoodle Nancy who claimed to channel an Indian chief who talked to aliens (or some such...) who told him that Planet X was going to sweep through the inner solar system wreaking havoc---nine or ten years ago, I think... (I must have been taking a nap at the time... ;-) ) She had a beautiful collection of images of lens flares which she believed was evidence of Niburu.

It's not completely clear, but I believe she may be able to out-crazy a birther---she's at least in the same league:

Before I paid too much attention to Birthers, I used to enjoy following the conspiracy theory ideas of those that threw some sort of "ancient aliens" plot into the mix. At least those are all mostly fun, harmless and entertaining; unlike Birtherism, which sometimes evokes laughter, but mostly goes to levels so stupid and often vile, that you can't help coming away with some sense of disgust.

But, as someone who follows the developments in real science and astronomy rather closely, I can confindently place all the Niburu "Planet X" stuff now clearly in the realm of fantasy fiction too. While much smaller solid bodies in space can still go undetected, even at fairly close distances (like small asteroids of a few miles in diameter at most), it is simply not realistic to assume that bodies of the size alleged for a "Planet X" could approach without being detected, many years in advance.

Here is a good site for a list of actual NEO objects that are currently tracked and their chances of intersecting with our orbit:
